JOURNEYMAN UPGRADE CLASS SCHEDULE
SIGNALING AND RIGGING CARD CERTIFICATON:
Presently International Signaling and Rigging qualification cards have been issued to all members who have been initiated and have completed their apprenticeship with Local 17. If you did not complete the apprenticeship and would like to obtain training for a Signaling and/or Rigging qualification card, please contact Jeff Carlson at the Training Center for more information and registration.
WELDING CERTIFICATION:
In order to protect our work, Local 17 needs members certified in stainless and innershield welding. With spring and summer approaching many scheduled Cleveland area projects will start breaking ground. If you do not have your welding certifications please take the time now in acquiring these certs. Remember protecting our work is protecting your paycheck. If you are interested in welding instruction or recertification, please contact the Training Center Office to schedule an appointment. All Training and Testing is done free of charge. With the exception of: A re-testing fee of $60.00 PER POSITION will be charged for all RE-tests due to lack of work record. Please Note: Due to the cost increase of materials, a motion to increase the weld testing fee from $50 per test to $60 per POSITION passed unanimously at the April, 8 2011 JATC meeting.
ATTENTION STATE CERTIFIED & INTERNATIONAL REGISTERED WELDERS: As a reminder to those members with State Welding Certification and registered with the International Welding Certification Program, it is your responsibility to keep your State Certification & International work recorded current. Welder employment records should be completed on the appropriate form, which includes the project name or number, the Contractor name, start and finish dates for the project on which you welded, supervisors name and their signature, along with a contact phone number. These forms must be submitted to ODOT and the International every six (6) months. If you are unsure on how to fill out these forms or you need additional forms, please contact the apprenticeship for assistance. Forms are available at the union hall or you can google “ODOT WELDERS UPDATE” and print out a form from your computer.

STOP THE ATTACK ON MIDDLE CLASS OHIO
BE SURE TO SIGN THE PETITION FOR SENATE BILL 5
SUPPORT UNITED FOOD AND COMMERCIAL WORKERS (UFCW) LOCAL 880
Do not fill prescriptions at Rite-Aid. Local 880 is currently in a labor dispute with Rite-Aid. Rite-Aid is trying to position the corporation to trample workers as evidenced by NLRB complaints claiming multiple violations against Rite-Aid in Local 880’s jurisdiction. Rite-Aid further insists that the corporation be allowed to raise health insurance premiums at will or even cancel health insurance with no employee input. By cancelling prescriptions with Rite-Aid until the strike is over, we can send a message that we do not support greed and violations of worker’s rights. Please fill prescriptions at worker friendly stores such as, CVS, Giant Eagle, Dave’s Supermarket and Acme.
HEALTHY LIFE SCREENING RESULTS
The following tests will were conducted at the April 9, 2011 screening:
- Echocardiogram of the heart screening for Left Ventricle Dysfunction: *72.7% tested normal, 2.3% tested moderate to severe, 25% tested mild
- Carotid Artery ultrasound/Intima-Media Thickness screening for plaque build-up and blood flow: *84.1% tested normal, 2.3% tested moderate to severe, 13.6% tested mild
- Abdominal Aorta ultrasound screening for Aneurysm: *100% tested normal
- Ankle Brachial Index screening for Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD):*95.5% normal, 4.5% moderate to severe
- Blood Pressure Screening: *27.3 tested normal, 29.5 tested moderate to severe, 53.2% tested mild
*Please note no identities of those tested were disclosed with these results
We cannot stress enough the importance of these tests that will allow early detection of today’s biggest and most feared killer, Cardiovascular Disease, more often undiscovered until it is too late. Seventy-five percent of the 44 persons tested on April 9th tested in the mild and severe range. Heart disease kills more men and women in the U.S. each year than the 2nd through 5th killers combined, including all cancers. Perhaps most frightening is, despite major advances in the treatment of coronary heart disease and stroke, a large number of individuals who were apparently "healthy" died suddenly without prior symptoms. Do not let yourself become a statistic:
- Over 50% of stroke and heart attack victims experience no warning signs
- An estimated 10 to 12 million Americans are unaware of blockages in their leg arteries
- 1 of every 2.6 deaths in America is because of heart disease
- Nearly 50% of all heart attacks occur in people under age 65
- Heart disease is present in 40% of people ages 45 to 54
Please take advantage of the Healthy Life Screenings when they are available to you and your spouse at Local 17. We cannot stress enough the benefits of preventive health care. By taking charge of your health and choosing a healthy life style, will reduce your risk for heart disease alone. This can be done by maintaining a healthy weight, checkups, eating right, staying physically active, limiting alcohol consumption and non-smoking to name a few. We will continue to keep you informed on ways to live and enjoy healthy life style. You have a chance to make good choices about your health, start today if you haven’t already.
Health care costs are rising at twice the rate of inflation. Obviously, there is no quick fix for our soaring health care costs, but keeping a healthy lifestyle with regular checkups is a strategy we can put into practice to aid in the battle.
